Tasting Guide

Cannabis contains hundreds of molecules that directly affect our minds and bodies. Cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids interact with different cells and receptors, influencing our experience with cannabis. These phytochemicals share similarities in therapeutic value and how we perceive cannabis through our senses. Many similarities suggest that these phytochemicals may interact or have synergy with each other. Dr. John McPartland, a well-known cannabis researcher, has stated that “cannabis is polypharmaceutical,” meaning diversely medicinal, and the “synergy arises from interactions between its multiple components.” Our intent in providing this information is to introduce and support a more holistic view of cannabis consumption and aid our customers in selecting cannabis strains and products that will fulfill their particular needs and desires.
Every strain of cannabis we cultivate, by law, is tested for cannabinoids and its total THC and CBD content provided to the consumer. Additionally, we have all strains tested for terpene content a minimum of three times to establish an average terpene profile for each. Based on our lab test results, we created a tasting guide for our in-house strains, dependent on their terpene profiles, that provides each strain's genetics and average total THC content. We hope that these groupings will help our consumers identify the terpenes and strains they are drawn to and discover other strains to try based on desired flavors and potential therapeutic effects.
Higher Grade’s goal with providing this education is to expand our customers' and budtenders' conversations about cannabis beyond individual flavor preferences and Sativa/Indica classifications, to include the phytochemically rich and diverse nature of cannabis and its connection to flavor profiles and effects.
Strain Groupings

Strains the Contain
Significant Levels of Pinene
Pinene is potent in both its fresh piney flavor and cognitive effects, and very few of our strains contain significant amounts. For this reason, we grouped all strains with substantial levels of Pinene together. In this graphic, alpha and beta-Pinene content percentages are combined, as they have similar effects on the body, and the strains are displayed top to bottom by their Pinene levels. The higher the content, the more pronounced the flavor and effects will be over the other terpenes.

Both terpenes are soothing to stomach discomfort and can be mood-lifting. The Humulene in the Ice Cream Cake will offer a gingery element to the flavor profile and additional relaxing potential. Papaya Punch has sweet and floral features to its flavor, unlike others in this group, due to its Bisabolol content.

Strains that are a Combination of Myrcene, Caryophyllene & Limonene
This strain grouping contains terpene profiles with combinations of significant levels of Myrcene, Caryophyllene, and Limonene. In terms of flavor, this combination will have musky elements from Myrcene, spicy/peppery elements from Caryophyllene, and zesty citrus elements from Limonene. The content of each terpene will determine which one in the combination is most pronounced in terms of flavor and effects. Strains with high levels of THC and a Myrcene dominant terpene profile have the potential to provide a very potent high

With Caryophyllene most prevalent and the addition of Humulene, strains in this grouping will have a flavor that contains elements of spice, pepper, ginger, and herbs. Strains with Myrcene next to Caryophyllene have additional skunky, musky features to their flavor and can be more sedative and psychoactive. Strains with Limonene next to Caryophyllene will have more substantial zesty citrus and diesel fuel elements in their flavor profiles and can be more mood-lifting.
